Chengdu Science City: An Emerging Hi-tech Innovation Zone

Chengdu Science City (CSC), located on the picturesque shores of Xinglong Lake, is 31 kilometers away from Tianfu Square, a landmark of central Chengdu, capital of western China’s Sichuan Province.

Focusing on hi-tech innovation and sci-tech development, CSC is accelerating its pace of developing new technologies and new industries to become a powerhouse propelling the fast economic and social growth of Tianfu New Area.

Greatest Efforts to Become a National Science Center

On August 30, 2016, Beihang University (BU), formerly known as Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA), came to an agreement with Chengdu on building an international innovation hub inside CSC. To invest a total of more than 10 billion yuan in the project, BU will establish two research institutes of aero-engine & space engine, and innovation in aerodynamics respectively in the City.

CSC will be home to lots of major hi-tech projects and important scientific facilities, including the circulation technology lab of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), the high altitude air shower lab of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the dark matter research center of Tsinghua University.

Aiming to foster a remarkable cluster of innovative elements, and become a national pilot area for innovation-driven development and the leader of hi-tech innovation in China's western regions, Chengdu is vigorously developing new sciences, new technologies, new industries, and building new cities, to cultivate the most dynamic pole of growth in western China and ultimately turn into a national science center and hi-tech innovation center.

It's highly encouraging that CSC, like the Silicon Valley in the US, is home not only to R & D platforms of both basic and applied sciences, but to platforms and companies involving technology and industrial economic transformation.

Famous colleges and universities both from home and abroad, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beihang University, Sichuan University, University of Electronic Science and Technology, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, and Stanford Research Institute International, will found their collaborative innovation centers and research centers in the City.

With Sichuan continuously advancing its pilot programs for comprehensive innovation and reform through furthering civil-military integration, the fourth research institute of China Aerospace Science & Industry Corp. and the high polymer materials research institute of Selen Science & Technology will launch projects in CSC, which is widely believed to be a pivot to build Chengdu into western China's science and technology center.
