Panda Zhi Ma Selected as Real Mascot "Rongbao"

3-year-old giant panda Zhi Ma, was officially announced to become the real mascot by voting.

A naming ceremony of "Rongbao", the mascot of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games (WUG) Summer, was held at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (Panda Base) on the morning of Aug.19, 2020. The 3-year-old giant panda Zhi Ma, was officially announced to become the real mascot by voting.

The 2021 FISU WUG Summer is scheduled to take place in August 2021 in Chengdu. Since the mascot Rongbao, a panda doll with its right hand holding a torch, made its appearance at the end of 2019, it has won wide attention and praise.

In order to embrace the one-year countdown to the Games, an online poll was launched at the official website (https://www.2021chengdu.com) of the 2021 FISU WUG Summer on August 16th and shared across social media platforms. 4 real giant pandas were chosen from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to compete for the title by voting.

The online voting ended on 12:00, August 18th. With the highest votes, Zhi Ma was selected as the real mascot of the Games, as well as the brand-new image of the sports event.

As China's national treasure, the globally famous giant panda has been the significant image of the giant panda's home, Chengdu, for international exchanges. The creative idea to make the mascot of the Chengdu 2021 FISU WUG Summer become the real panda will help to promote the grand sports and the host city.

After a global online poll "Choosing a Real Rongbao", panda Zhi Ma became the champion as the real "Rongbao"! Many people think 3-year-old Zhi Ma appears really like the cartoon image of "Rongbao". During the contest, fans and panda lovers voted enthusiastically for the "Rongbao" in their heart. The contest also attracted the attention of nearly 100 media from home and abroad.
